McDowell County is getting a new address—one address at a time!

The West Virginia  State Legislature  created the WV Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board , in 2001 to enable city-type addressing in rural areas of the state for 9-1-1 service. A city-type address, such as 250 Mountain Road, clearly identifies where a telephone is physically located when dialing a 9-1-1. Current rural postal addresses do not provide this location information. (Box numbers and rural routes).

McDowell county has elected to be a part of this state-wide effort. Creating city-type addresses requires naming all roads with unique names and assigning numbers consistently to all properties. Once the road names and property numbers are assigned and adopted by our county/community the new city-type addresses will be used primarily for 9-1-1 service. The US Postal Service, utilities, delivery services, and others will benefit from these addresses, as well..

The project is underway, aerial photography of the State has been completed and the addressing portion of the project is next on the agenda! For more information about this giant step forward for our County’s safety and security visit the WV Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board’s web site at,  www.addressing wv.org, or contact the Addressing/Mapping Department  of the McDowell County 911 Center at 304-436-4106; or addressing@citlink.net.
